Sara Martel
Sara Martel is a professional writer and artist with a lifelong passion for creativity and its healing impact. She’s written for national and regional magazines and for a variety of nonprofit organizations including the Massachusetts Audubon Society and the North Shore Rape Crisis Center.
Upon learning of Surviving Spirit’s mission, Sara felt galvanized to participate as a member of the board. A survivor of childhood trauma herself, Sara knows firsthand its oftentimes devastating effects and the life-transforming impact that healing can have. She believes that Surviving Spirit has the capacity to inspire those feeling overwhelmed with hopelessness, by conveying that healing from trauma truly is achievable.
Beginning in her early 30’s, Sara was rendered disabled by a debilitating illness and understands the difficulties people with disabilities may face as they attempt reentry to the workforce, as well as challenges they may have navigating the health system.
Sara has prepared and led creativity-based healing workshops for Vital Cycles (a nonprofit dedicated to healing the emotional impact of trauma) and also serves as a special advisor to the Board of Trustees for this organization. In this capacity, she’s assisted with the planning and implementation of a number of healing retreats for adult trauma survivors. Sara has served as a past board member for the St. Louis Audubon Society and as a Speaker’s Bureau member for the Nature Conservancy of Missouri.
